Writing Techniques

PolytechnicSchoolofArchitectureandUrbanPlanningEPAU

The Writing Techniques (WT100) course at EPAU Algiers is engineered around an operational three-subsystem architecture designed by Dr. Taous Bouzida to deliver a structured, hybrid learning experience:

1. Entry System (Système d'Entrée)

Establishes foundational knowledge and assesses baseline readiness. Students explore interactive VUE visual concept maps that map out course competencies and prerequisites. A mandatory Diagnostic Test evaluates initial proficiency. An automated conditional remediation loop directs students scoring below 5.0/10 to the study guide, "How to Write a Report as an Architect", ensuring learners master prerequisites before advancing.

2. Learning System (Système d'Apprentissage)

Delivers core technical content through two instructional chapters:

  • Chapter 1 (Anatomy and Typologies): Covers formal definitions, document structure, and the 10 authentic Algerian architectural report typologies (such as site visit reports / PV de Chantier).
  • Chapter 2 (Technical Language and Style): Focuses on linguistic precision, active voice usage, directional clarity, visual captioning, and report evaluation via Radar Chart analysis.

3. Exit System (Système de Sortie)

Consolidates learning and measures cumulative outcomes. It combines continuous portfolio drafting, a comprehensive final exam ("All in All" quiz), and a Master Portfolio deposit space ("Put Things Together"), alongside student course evaluation surveys.

Assessment Framework & Folio Assignments

Evaluation is continuous, authentic, and portfolio-driven, guiding students through three sequential Folio assignments:

  • Folio 1: Comparing architectural report structures.
  • Folio 2: Collecting and auditing authentic field documents.
  • Folio 3: Curating a professional architectural report gallery.

Final grading uses a transparent 10-point rubric assessing four dimensions: document submission (1 point), student self-assessment (3 points), technical report execution (3 points), and teacher review (3 points) to calculate a final score out of 20.
